Marriage-III-C

05 Aug

Liberals in Congress are pushing the “Respect for Marriage Act” that could codify the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell vs Hodges that created the Constitutional right to same-sex marriages in the event that the Supreme Court case is overturned. Neither the Supreme Court or the federal government have the right to regulate marriage. The Constitution says that is the responsibility of the State since it does not assign it to the federal government. It would force a State to recognize a marriage as long as it was legal in the State where it occurred, even though that marriage is illegal in the State. It is very similar to laws enacted by Congress before the Civil War which free States to recognize a slave as the property of its owner as long as slavery was legal in the slave’s home State, even though slavery was illegal in the State the slave resided in. It does not limit the marriage to two partners either, so the federal government would have to recognize in federal law and all States would have recognize in their State laws, whatever definition of marriage any State would adopt. It would overturn the statutes in 34 States that define marriage as between a man and a woman. It would also nullify Constitutional amendments in 24 of those States that define marriage as between a man and a woman. It would create a legal nightmare where conservative States would have to obey the laws of liberal States, even when it violates their constitution. Apparently, they have forgotten who voted them into office and who is paying their salary. It is time for the voters to remind them when they go to the polls in November.

Marriage-III-B

The American people support protecting marriage and have repeatedly voted for laws protecting marriage, only to have them overturned by the courts (even though the courts don’t have jurisdiction to overturn voter approved laws). The courts are to interpret laws and rule on the Constitutionality of laws passed by Congress, the Constitution does not give them authority to overturn laws passed by the voters. Our courts have already shown that they will do anything to promote the Gay agenda until we get laws that specifically protect marriage. It is imperative that voters vote for judges and representatives that will uphold the Constitution and respect the rule of law. It is also imperative that we elect representatives in both the national House and the Senate who will defend marriage. We also need to write our Senators and Representatives and urge them to push through laws protecting marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Those supporting Gay marriage know that any popular vote on the issue will be defeated
because most people oppose Gay privileges. Therefore, they choose to go through the
legislatures and the courts. Gay Rights organizations know they can sway Democratic
votes by contributing large sums to their election campaigns and while many Republicans
oppose Gay privileges, they are afraid to speak out because of smear campaigns by Gay
Rights activists or are outvoted by legislatures dominated by Democrats. Democrats are
pushing a bill right now called the “Respect for Marriage Act” which would openly trash
marriage and open it to anyone who wants to get the benefits of marriage, whether it be those
of the opposite sex or not and the shameful thing is that some Republican legislators who
have always supported real marriage are caving in and supporting it. Christians need to
support and vote for legislators and judges who support the sanctity of marriage.

In response to the Supreme Court decision in 2015, the Social Security Administration extended survivor’s benefits to survivors of beneficiaries who were in same sex marriages. In 2021, it further extended benefits to survivors of same sex unions who were not married but who claim they would have married if they had been able to. Almost one out of ten social Securities recipients receives survivors benefits, many of them are minor children who have lost a parent who received Social Security. Social Security was designed to help the elderly who could no longer work and those dependent on Social Security beneficiaries who lost their support due to the death of the recipient. The Social Security fund is already threatened with becoming insolvent due to raids by Congress on the fund for other purposes. Extending it to a large number of people who could marry, solely to get Social Security benefits, or even worse, to extend it to people who could claim a relationship that doesn’t legally exist, is to further endanger the people who depend on it. Congress needs to enact a law requiring those receiving survivors benefits to be legally married to or a direct dependent of a beneficiary.

By 2015, the vast majority of States had passed laws or constitutional amendments defining marriage as between a man and a woman. In 2015, the Supreme Court issued an unconstitutional decision when it required all States and the federal government to accept the Gay definition of marriage. Regulating marriage is the jurisdiction of the States and the Supreme Court only has jurisdiction over laws that transcend State boundaries. The Supreme Court overstepped its authority when it struck down the State law in North Carolina defining marriage as between a man and a woman since the law pertained only to North Carolina and was voted in by a vote of the voters of North Carolina. It also violates God’s law which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Some States have proposed laws declaring the Supreme Court decision non-binding in their State because it exceeds the boundaries set by the Constitution. Voters in other States should urge their State representatives to enact similar bills.

There are widespread advantages to being married. It is known that those who are married tend to live longer than those who aren’t. Marriage teaches people to work with others and compromise to maintain peace, it reduces stress by dividing the responsibility for maintaining the household between two people, and it provides emotional support to its members when they face stress. While those things can be gained in any two person relationship, marriage contains a commitment of two people to each other not found in other relationships. Most relationships do not have the closeness of living together. Living together provides more opportunity for disagreements and conflict than found in other relationships and people living together can’t ignore them like those who don’t live together. In addition, most relationships are short-lived and lack the permanency of marriage. Without the commitment of marriage, one or both can decide to end the relationship when things get rough.

The number one request I got from pastors in Uganda was to tell them about marriage and family. They are experiencing a great breakdown in marriages and family. That is also a major problem in the United States. Marriage is under attack today but many churches do little to support the families that attend their church and divorces among church goers is about as prevalent as among those who don’t attend. While churches feel there is little they can do, there is actually a great deal they can do. I have written extensively on marriage and family and have a number of manuscripts available. They are listed on our website. I have also done numerous lectures on marriage and family. I am available to do lectures in person and on Zoom.

Male-Female Relations-B

While liberals have criticized Christianity for its treatment of women, they ignore the fact that Christianity values women and motherhood far above most other religions. Most cultures and religions range from ignoring the value of women to enslaving them. Most of the benefits women enjoy are the result of Judaism and Christianity. Though men oversaw the business of the church, the women oversaw the needs of the community. They served formally and informally as teachers, nurses, and Social service workers caring for the needy in the community. Most of those who mistreat and devalue women in our society have nothing to do with the Christian faith. The wife-beaters and the pimps are not only outside the church but are strongly condemned by the church. While liberal women claim that society views women as sex objects, society as a whole, due to the influence of Christianity, condemned such a view. It is the liberal influence which has resulted in the increasing view of women as sex objects in our society. Liberal women, true to the liberal philosophy ignored the facts and used such arguments to open the door to allow women to use themselves as sex objects to attract men. Those pushing the liberal philosophy have opened the doors to the widespread exploitation of women we see today. As a result, it has been increasingly difficult to enforce laws protecting women from rape and children from incest. (See “Truly In The World, But Not Of It-part-A” under “”Women’s Liberation And Women’s Rights”) While they claim that they are pushing for the liberation of women, they have broken down the laws protecting women, which their mothers and grandmothers fought so hard for.

Fourth Sunday of Lent-C

What should be our attitude toward divorce? Divorce should never be considered an option, except as a last resort in cases where one partner commits adultery or if there is danger to one partner, or any children because of abuse by the other. Our goal should be to help couples strengthen their marriage and work out difficulties, so their marriage doesn’t end in divorce. Once they are divorced, we should not judge them for we often don’t know the circumstances. Only God knows their heart. It may be that they were deserted or have escaped from an abusive situation. We should support them and any children in dealing with the difficult situation they face to minimize conflict between the partners and help them to work out the problems that led to the divorce, in the hope that they may be able to reconcile and restore the marriage.

Fourth Sunday of Lent-B

On divorce Matt 19:3-6 Today we take divorce lightly. Two people can divorce purely by stating that they are no longer compatible, but it has not always been so. Previously, divorce was only recognized for adultery on the part of one partner. Jesus states that God made them male and female and so a man and woman will leave their parents and be joined together as one. By sexual intercourse, they are joined in a commitment to any children that result and if children result, they are joined in that child since the child receives DNA from each of them. What God has joined, no man should separate. God knew what allowing divorce would do. It would leave women without husbands to support them, children without a father and mother together to teach them to become mature adults, and constant fighting over custody and child support. In short, it would create divisions in society and disrupt the proper rearing of children.
