Fifth Sunday of Kingdomtide-Oct 5-B

Value of Life-Since the world believes we are here by accident, people do not value life beyond themselves. Those joining the church for the first time must be taught the value of life through example. They must see the church honoring others as God’s creation, not just because they have economic value. They will see the value of the individual as the church supports those experiencing difficulty and celebrates the accomplishments of members. They will see it as the church involves members in decisions rather than merely making decisions in board meetings and informing the congregation afterward. They will see it as the church encourages them to discover their talents and use them to build up the church and to minister to those beyond the church that are in need. But they will see it most as the church seeks to protect the unborn, the crippled, and the elderly, who can not protect themselves and who have no economic value. Babies who may not be wanted by their parents, may be an answer to prayer of someone who wants children but cannot have them on their own. Those who are sick, disabled, or elderly may continue to contribute love, encouragement, or other benefits that cannot be measured. Even those whose only apparent value comes from the fact that they were created by God and belong to Him. Walking with Christ helps us see things as God sees them and not just what we see on our own. Unfortunately, many churches today have lost the value of the individual and members become lost in the crowd.

Value of Life  As Christians, we recognize that every person is created by God for a purpose and only God has the right to say when that life ends. While liberals say that that they care about the girl who is pregnant and want to help her, they simply want to get rid of the baby so it won’t be a problem for society. They say that the girl has a right to take the life of her baby if it will inconvenience her, but once you state that, you open the door to allow other people to claim the right to kill someone who inconveniences them, whether it is an aging parent, a terminally ill family member, or simply someone that gets in their way on the freeway.  In addition, every life is created with a purpose and we should not allow any life to be wasted. God wants us to have life and that more abundantly so we should seek to help everyone to reach their full potential by helping them find God’s purpose for them and helping them achieve it.

I will be  speaking at the Wood County Senior Center in Bowling Green during the month of October. Up until the 1960’s, America was a strong and prosperous country built on its founding values. Though they were only ideals in the beginning, they have gradually been realized. Since the 1960’s, those values have been corrupted and distorted in a way that has destroyed our families, our economy, and our government. I will be discussing the values of life Oct 9,the value of the rule of law Oct 16, the value of family Oct 23, the value of time, truth, and education Oct 30, and the value of you, your work, and your possessions Nov  6. Sign up through the Senior Center.

K-Value of Education-     A Democracy needs people who understand the problems we face and can make wise decisions based on facts. That requires a public school system open to all that teaches children what they will need to know to make wise decisions. Our country became great because of the spread of free public education open to everyone. The schools originally taught students about issues relating to history, government, and social problems and taught kids to study both sides of a question in order to determine the right course of action. They used essay questions, so the students learned how to evaluate problems and make wise decisions. Many of our schools now seek to indoctrinate rather then educate. They teach students to memorize facts and accept the answers given by the teacher through true and false or multiple-choice questions.  The only acceptable answer is the one the teacher gives. They also teach them distorted history in order to indoctrinate them to be submissive subjects. While issues were once debated, those who question the accepted views now are often ridiculed or silenced. If students don’t see the problems of the past and accurately see what worked and what didn’t, they can’t make wise decisions about what course the nation should take in the future.

Value of Truth -Nothing is more important in understanding the past than the truth. At Jesus’ trial, many accused Jesus but they had conflicting testimony.  Finally, Pilate got tired of the arguing. As he questioned Jesus, Jesus stated that he came to proclaim the truth but Pilate asked, “what is truth?” (John 19:37-38) Liberals say there is no absolute truth-Truth is what you believe to be true. As a result it may vary from one person to the next. In essence, they can never lie because whatever they say is considered truth by them. Therefore we need to weigh carefully what they say. When they support climate change for instance, they consider that true. They seek evidence to support it and if any evidence contradicts that, they dismiss it as irrelevant. They give the appearance of basing their ideas on science, but do not really seek the truth, they only seek evidence to prove their theories. In fact, the belief that the world is the result of chance accidents actually discourages scientific discovery because it denies that there are any set laws that govern the universe. They do not believe that there are any set laws to be explored. Everything is a matter of throwing things together in the off chance that it will create something useful. In addition, research is limited to those things that will benefit the researcher.

Christians believe there is an inherent truth that does not change. They look at the evidence to decide what is true and if new evidence comes in to the contrary, they change their idea of what is true. While liberals say that science and faith are at odds with each other, in fact science proves faith every day. True believers support scientific discovery to learn more about how the world works so they can develop new things to make life better. Understanding natural laws gives you a starting point that enables you to follow a line of reasoning to a logical conclusion. Discovery isn’t a matter of chance, it is simply following a trail to the end. Science is the discovery of the laws that govern the universe and then developing things based on those laws that make life better. Research may seek to develop many ideas that won’t benefit the researcher but will have great benefit to someone else.

Value of time- Too often today history is portrayed as a meaningless list of names and dates to remember for a test and then we promptly forgot them. My mother was a genealogist who studied the family history. It wasn’t simply an exercise to prove we were descendants from the Pilgrims so she could join the Mayflower Society, but a real interest in our family’s history. She didn’t just rack up a list of names and dates but took a real interest in who they were and what they did. The family history was the story of our family, the struggles they went through, the obstacles they overcame, and the tragedies they endured. However, it was much more. We  can learn from the mistakes and successes of the past. There is an old saying that he who does not remember the past is destined to repeat its mistakes. God showed how He valued history when He ordained three celebrations that the Israelites were to celebrate forever, not just for a while. Each celebration was designed to teach important aspects of the faith and had three aspects. It had a past physical event that explained an important part of the faith and was to be remembered. It also had a present to celebrate it which reenacted the event. It reminded everyone of its meaning in order to teach the children, and to remind the adults. At each celebration, the oldest boy or girl would stand and ask why they were celebrating it. The father would then explain the past event and its meaning.  The celebration would also remind them of a future physical event. The event  would fulfill a spiritual promise that God had made. (see the lesson on the celebrations in the course “Basic Christian Beliefs”)  Had the Jews remembered what the celebrations meant and what the prophets had foretold, they would have recognized what Christ was doing as He carried out what was predicted in the Passover meal.

Value of Gender-Many people today mistake gender for sex. Sex is determined by either XX or XY chromosomes. Men and women are physically different and the difference is easy to tell with the naked eye. One has only to look between their legs and they should have no trouble determining which sex they are. Abortion was pushed to break down the desire for normal long term male-female relationships in favor of short term gratification. Kids were promised they could have their fun and not worry about consequences, but it was all a lie. Those who are Gay have experienced some form of trauma or poor relationship with those of the opposite sex and turn to those of the same sex to get the sexual gratification they can’t get through normal male-female relations. They are trying to convince us that their relationships are normal, but something isn’t normal unless it is fairly prevalent throughout society. However, the Gay lifestyle has never made up more than 1-2% of the population, except during population disruptions facing breakdown of the family, and even then has never been a large percentage. Down through history, society has recognized that the different sexes have  different abilities and constructed gender roles that fit those abilities. These roles are socially determined and vary from culture to culture and may change with time within a culture.  There are people today who deny the obvious and have constructed an illusion where they confuse gender with sex. They feel that since they don’t fit the gender roles of society, that they must have been born  the wrong sex. Then they try to change their sex to match their gender. They can cut and paste all they want to but they can never turn a boy into a girl or a girl into a boy. Their sex is embedded in every cell of their body. They need to change their gender to match their sex.

Value of Family  When God created mankind, He created them man and woman. He has put in each of us an attraction for those of the opposite sex to draw men and women together to form families to protect and nurture the children. Each was created  with certain abilities to carry out the roles that God created for them. Women needed to bear children and care for them and God gave them the ability to feel another’s pain which is important for caring for someone else. Men need to provide for and protect the women and God gave them strength and the ability to plan and build which are important in hunting and protecting the family, and in providing shelter. He designed the family so that the two would combine their abilities to provide everything that the children needed to grow into productive adults. Children need both a father and a mother to learn how men and women should relate which is essential in establishing a stable marriage. In addition, the boy needs the father to teach him what he needs to become and a mother to show him what he needs to find in the mother of his future children. The girl needs a mother  to show her what she needs to become and a father to know what to seek in a future husband. While some contend that two mothers or two fathers, or a single mother or father will do, they do not provide all that is needed. We are currently reaping the results of our failing  families. We must restore the family as the basic unit of society but it will be difficult because most young people today have never seen a stable marriage and don’t know how to relate to others, particularly those of the opposite sex.
