Sixth Sunday of Epiphany-Feb. 12

08 Feb

Sixth Sunday of Epiphany– Building Bridges– Today, many neighbors are isolated and do not know each other. In the past, neighborhoods were close knit communities where people worked and shopped nearby and helped each other in times of need.  Increasing mobility has separated housing from office and shopping areas and has made even stable neighborhoods into bedroom communities. People work and shop elsewhere and only come home to have supper and sleep. Family used to provide support but many live a long way from any family members. They have no one to reach out to in an emergency or in time of need. By getting to know your neighbors you can build bridges that help you be there when they need help and opens opportunities to share the Gospel with them.

One of my major concerns is that large numbers of people go long periods of time seeking jobs with little success while there are large numbers of jobs that go unfilled due to a lack of applicants. The job market has changed drastically in the past few years but most people seeking jobs still seek a job the old way which no longer works well. Many job openings are never publicized but are circulated among a small number of people because of the number of people looking for jobs. I meet many church people who are looking for work and sit in church with other church members who know about job openings but don’t know that the person next to them is looking for work. Churches need to find ways to bring those seeking jobs together with job openings. Many job opportunities I hear of go unfilled for a long time. I publish some of the job opportunities on my website that are widespread needs for those looking for work. Churches could do something similar or have a member who works with those who are unemployed and puts out regular requests for job opportunities that the congregation may be aware of. See my video on You Tube on ministering to the unemployed. The link is on our website at neighborhoodministries.net

President Biden is proclaiming his  success in restoring the economy by bragging about the large number of jobs filled this past month. However anyone with any understanding of economics knows that this is the time when summer businesses start hiring. It is early yet for northern States like Michigan and Ohio but mid-American States like Kentucky and Tennessee are interviewing to hire. Further South they have probably already got a good number of those they want to hire for the summer. Nurseries, landscaping businesses, and businesses that cater to tourists are beginning to fill out their summer staff. I would be very concerned if there was no big spike in hiring at this time. In fact the number he brags about sounds low to me. The spike in hiring is not due  to his success but to normal seasonal hiring. Just last week I saw a notice about Covid relief money going out to businesses that continued to pay their staff during the pandemic. Those were the businesses like Walmart and similar businesses that were big enough that they could afford to stay open. Many small businesses closed because they were unable to go on paying staff with no business to bring in money to pay the staff with, because the government forced them to close. The government put so many conditions on staying open that the small businesses could not meet them. The big businesses pushed the regulations knowing they could accommodate them but smaller businesses could not. The companies knew it would destroy their competitors and they would profit in spite of the added expense. While the administration stated it was declaring war on the rich and on big business, their policies aided big businesses and forced many of the small businesses out of business. The rich who are heavily invested in big businesses benefited while small businesses and their employees lost out. The American people need to look at the results of their economic policies and understand what is really happening to the economy. They should not be misled by rhetoric which is designed to hide the administrations failures and make it look good.

Reaching the Children-Neighborhood children often congregate at the homes of Christians who have children because they feel the love that the parents have for their children and they enjoy the peace that reigns in a Christian home. Often their own parents ignore them or may even verbally or physically abuse them. It provides an excellent opportunity to show them through personal example that someone cares about them. It provides an opportunity to show them that God loves them and cares about them through Bible stories and video lessons. Children may be interested in a Children’s Bible Club. The church family may teach it or provide space for someone from the church to teach it. There is no problem with needing transportation like in traditional Vacation Bible Schools since the children live in the neighborhood. As the neighborhood children hear the Gospel and see it demonstrated, they may eventually want to attend church and urge their parents to take them.

It is also important to understand the domino effect. It doesn’t end with abortion. Abortion promotes the idea that you can eliminate someone if they inconvenience you. Abortionists in the United States are now pushing through laws to legalize killing babies after they are born.  California has already passed such a law. Canada and Europe have shown us that once killing babies after birth is accepted, they move on to legalizing killing children and adults who are not wanted, are critically ill or injured, are aged, or are just depressed. However, the effect goes beyond legal channels to effect everyday life. If you feel it is acceptable to kill a baby that gets in the way of your happiness, that feeling easily spreads to other people who get in your way. As a result, we have seen a great increase in spouse and child abuse, mothers killing their children, road rage, and murders, including mass murders. Once you believe life is expendable, it grows like a cancer to infect all of society. Therefore it is important to help people see that life is important and taking any life deprives society of the contributions that life could have made. We cannot be silent and ignore the growing belief that life is expendable. Those who recognize the value of life must speak out and not let those who profit from abortion silence them.

However, laws alone won’t solve the problem as long as many people continue to view it as acceptable. Prohibition showed us that. Alcohol was outlawed but carried on in secret. The Black market continued to supply alcohol to illegal bars and nightclubs. As long as people want something, someone will provide it.  As long as people feel they can commit sex outside marriage and get away with it, they will do so, and when they get pregnant, they will seek an abortion and other people will provide them. Therefore, the important thing that is needed is to  help people see that abortion is wrong. Since many people today either don’t believe in God or have convinced  themselves that God doesn’t care what they do, it will do no good to tell them God hates killing babies. They must be convinced that not only does it kill the baby, who is a living person from conception, it also harms the mother.

While the goal has been to repeal Roe vs Wade, overturning it is not the end of the fight. Roe vs Wade set off a tidal wave that seeks to destroy America. Before Roe vs Wade, abortion was viewed almost universally as wrong and only practiced in back alleys by the truly desperate. Even they often viewed it as wrong but saw no other alternative. Sex outside marriage was restricted to prostitutes and those outside the general culture due to fear of pregnancy and the resulting social scorn. It was illegal in every State. When Roe vs Wade was decided, it allowed abortion by preventing the courts from prosecuting those who violated the laws against abortion. It never made it legal. At first, most people viewed it as legal but wrong. However abortionists took advantage of it and abortion became widespread. It gave people the idea they could have sex without having to worry about the consequences, however it was slow to catch on because many still viewed it as wrong. As it became widespread and the media promoted it, more people began to see it as acceptable.  Overturning it doesn’t make it illegal, it has always been illegal until recently. Overturning it allowed the courts to enforce the laws against abortion. Many States rushed to reinstate their abortion laws but some States rushed to legalize abortion. If abortion is legal in your State, you need to push the legislature to make it illegal.  Laws legalizing abortion are unconstitutional because the Constitution guarantees the right to life and States can not legally take away that right, however it depends on the courts to enforce the laws. We have many liberal courts that do not recognize the rule of law and feel they have the right to  allow abortion to continue. They claim they are broadly interpreting the law but are openly violating it. Therefore it is important to vote in legislators who will pass laws against abortion and judges that will respect the law.

Sharing Christ Most Christians do not talk about church or the Gospel outside of church for fear of offending someone, so most people don’t know whether their neighbors attend church or not. While many Christians assume their neighbors attend a church somewhere, the fact is that most probably do not. If your neighbors attend church, their church may not provide fellowship and support and they may welcome friendship with other Christians, or their church may be too far away for them to participate in many church activities. If they do not attend church, they may be seeking a church but not know anyone who belongs to one providing an opportunity to invite them. Many of their neighbors have not had any contact with a church and do not have any reason to seek one. Those without Christ often live day to day, their only hope is to survive until tomorrow. They will not know that Christ can made a difference in their life until they see that it has made a difference in your life. As you visit your neighbors, you can witness to them about the benefits of attending church and may even get a chance to tell them about Christ.

The Attorney Generals of 22 States have called  on the FDA to reverse its new policy on abortion pills.  Until recently the drugs were considered so dangerous that they could only be administered in a hospital setting with an attending physician present. However, the FDA has issued new guidelines at the urging of President Biden that allow it to be sold over the counter by licensed pharmacies with no medical supervision. It is hard to imagine that the previous restrictions are suddenly no longer needed. If it was felt to be that dangerous before, why isn’t it considered dangerous now? All pregnancies can cause severe bleeding and infection if the afterbirth does not come away clean. Abortion drugs increase the risk because the child is forcefully expelled and not a natural birth. Most natural births are attended by a doctor or midwife who can spot problems but the drugs can now be purchased over the counter or by mail and taken in the privacy of their own home where there won’t be any doctor or midwife present and the woman may be completely alone with no one available to summon help in case she has a medical emergency. The woman does not even need to consult a doctor before purchasing it to see if she is at risk of complications. It is irresponsible to dispense such dangerous drugs with no medical supervision.

President Biden also authorized pharmacies to sell abortion drugs and Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy both declared that they will do so. Both did declare however that they would obey State laws and not sell them in States where it is not legal. The danger lies in the area of employee conscience. While federal law protects doctors and nurses from being forced to perform abortions when it violates their conscience, President Obama and President Biden both pressured hospitals to force doctors and nurses to perform abortions even if it goes against their conscience, and pressured hospitals to perform abortions, even when it violates their policy, in violation of federal law. It is probable that President Biden will pressure the pharmacies to force their pharmacists to dispense abortion drugs even when it violates their conscience as well. That is nothing new to them since President Obama threatened States with a federal lawsuit if they cleaned up their voter rolls, even though federal law requires them to do so. To prosecute States, hospitals, and individuals for obeying federal and State laws is a travesty of justice.
