President Biden has taken an abrupt reversal on his stand on developing American oil. While he previously opposed it, he has suddenly reversed himself and decided to open up development of America’s oil resources. Whether it is because the soaring gas prices are angering American voters who may abandon his party in the upcoming elections or because Russia’s threats to cut off our oil supply could jeopardize America’s economy (which would really anger American voters) is open to debate, however it shows that they do care about getting reelected and realize they don’t have enough control of the election yet to throw it in their favor in spite of high opposition from voters. They may not care about what voters want, but they do care about how they vote. The media helps them divert voter attention away from critical issues like the economy, however it has limits. Voters may not get upset about rising inflation if it is gradual and the media keeps telling them that it is just a temporary rise caused by Covid-19, but when Russia threatens to cut off our oil supply and gas prices double in a short time, causing steep rises in prices of other goods, voters begin to notice and realize how dependent we have become on foreign oil. They begin to realize that the media has been lying to them and relying on foreign oil is not in our best interests. President Biden is making a desperate attempt to save the upcoming elections but will it be enough? Is he just saying he will open up American oil development to win votes, or will he actually follow through and do what he says? His past opposition raises questions about whether it is just a publicity stunt to save the upcoming elections.
