Housing/Homelessness-B-B

08 Jan

In the United States, we have seen the purchase of housing by rental agencies for many years, making housing more expensive and less available for ownership. This is especially a problem in rural areas which were often elderly people who moved off  the farm into small towns. When they died or went into a nursing home, rental agents bought up the houses. As a result, towns that used to have a high level of home ownership now have a much lower level. Rental units have a high level of turnover and renters usually have no commitment to the town. The result has been increased crime and towns no longer are close knit communities like they once were. Renters often don’t get to know their neighbors because they don’t plan on staying very long. The increase in rentals have also broken down the close knit neighborhoods in many cities. Home ownership brings more stability because people plan on staying a while and are more likely to get to know their neighbors. When people know their neighbors, they recognize the presence of strangers who may be bent on committing crimes, but when people don’t know their neighbors, they do not usually notice strangers and there is often more crime. This was true in the inner-city and is becoming more common in more established neighborhoods.  Part of it is driven by the fact that young families are no longer able to purchase homes as easily and may rent until they get established and can purchase a home, however part of it is the result of the increased mobility in this country. People no longer keep the same job for most of their life but are forced to move frequently in search of new jobs due to layoff or because they are no longer satisfied with their job, so they are more likely to rent than to purchase a home. As a result, homeownership has dropped and there is increased demand for rental property.

First Sunday of Epiphany-Feb 8

04 Jan

Reveal the Reason- When my wife and I were young, we would go out before Christmas to see the light displays. They depicted all kinds of things from Manger scenes to Santa Claus scenes and many others. Today, there are far fewer displays, and most are just lights. They are nice to look at but not nearly as interesting. Christmas is an excellent time to put up a display of the manger scene. Liberals have gotten them banned from a lot of public places, so it is up to churches and individual Christians to remind people why we celebrate Christmas. Children are curious. They may ask you, why do you have a display of people in the front yard? It gives you the opportunity to tell the Christmas story of how God sent Jesus to help us. Start planning now to be a witness for Christ next Christmas. Buy a commercial one or build your own. Christmas cards also give an opportunity to remind people why we celebrate. Now is a good time to get them because stores are getting rid of their Christmas stock at sale prices

Government Economics-II-I

While President Biden totes his massive spending bill (one of several) he talks about the fact that it won’t cost the average American because they will be taxing the rich and large corporations. It sounds nice but ignores basic economics. First, there aren’t enough rich to pay the price for the spending they want. Second, the rich won’t pay it. They will hide their money in tax free accounts. That will take money out of circulation which would normally be used to create new businesses and expand old ones. Next, taxing big corporations would hurt the average American because businesses would pass the cost on to the consumer (you and me) in higher prices for goods and services. That would hurt the poor, the retired, and others on fixed incomes who wouldn’t get pay raises. The less business, the less taxes coming in. Lastly, increased revenue only fuels their desire to spend more so the added money won’t pay down the debt.

It is really upsetting to see the rhetoric flying about the budget proposal. The Democrats are accusing the Republicans of refusing to give in and increase the debt limit when that is a two-way street. The Democrats aren’t giving in on cutting spending. The Democrats just want to up the debt limit so they can continue their wasteful spending. The Republicans gave in so they couldn’t be accused of shutting down the government and so we got saddled with a huge increase in spending again. It is time we call a stop to the wasteful spending and require our legislators to live within their budget like everyone else has to. Raising the debt limit will only put off the inevitable need to cut spending. The debt is getting so large it is hard to even pay the interest on it and allowing it to increase will only increase the interest. Eventually it will reach the point where we can’t pay the interest, let alone pay on the principle. It is time we demand that our law makers honor their campaign promises and cut spending. They won’t do it on their own, the American people have to demand that they do so.

President Biden just ordered a raise for federal employees. After robbing the average American by fueling inflation by pushing through massive new spending  and crippling the American energy programs, he turned around and hurt them again by pushing through huge new taxes. Now, he is rewarding the bureaucrats who already make fantastic salaries, and who are almost immune from firing due to strong unions, supported by laws enacted by liberal Democrats. The increased  cost of those raises will raise the budgets of federal agencies, however, there is nothing in the Constitution that authorizes the President to order expenditures from the treasury. The House must initiate and approve all budget items and they must be approved by the Senate. Once passed by Congress, the President has the authority to approve them or veto them, but can not change them. President Biden seems to think he can take the law into his own hands and change it at his own discretion.

First Sunday of Christmastide-Jan 1

28 Dec

Twelve Days of Christmas

Now that the commercial Christmas is over, we can relax and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas. Most people don’t realize that Christmas isn’t over, it actual runs for twelve days from Dec 25th to Jan 5th (few people think about the words in the song-“Twelve days of Christmas”). This time is called Christmastide and is a good time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas occurs on the shortest day of the year to remind us that when things were darkest and it seemed there was no hope, God came down to us in the form of a baby and dwelt among us. God revealed Himself to His people and He is with us. His presence changed the world forever. He isn’t someone up there in heaven, who is unreachable. He cared enough to come to us in our time of greatest need and is still here when we need Him

Christian Calendar

28 Dec

Why the Calendar  Many question why I use the Christian calendar for my messages. I am often accused of being tied to ritual, but I am not. I have very little interest in or use for ritual outside of Communion. Communion is special because God ordained it and commanded us to continue it. Even with Communion I am not tied to one tradition. I celebrate however those around me do, as long as it includes the basic elements instituted by Christ. (most who celebrate it sincerely do, though they celebrate them in a multitude of different ways) I use the Christian calendar for three reasons. (1) It ensures that I cover all the major Christian teachings in a year. (2) It ensures that I do them in an orderly way, each one building upon another so it is easier to understand. (3) It is an order widely accepted by other Christians, which reminds me we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, despite our differences. Though many holidays were added by men, the basic elements of the Jewish calendar and the Christian calendar were commanded by God and the fact that many churches today do not celebrate them (outside of Christmas and Easter) is one more indication that the church today no longer takes God’s Word seriously. (for more on the Christian holidays, see “Understanding the Path We Walk” which I published in 2015 or my course on the holiday celebrations on Udemy.
