When I worked for the Salvation Army Social Services, one of my volunteers from Bowling Green State University stated that her professor told his class that Conservatives do not make good Social Workers and she wanted to know how to respond to him. I feel this attitude is prevalent in many of our secular colleges and universities and in our churches and is discouraging many Christian young people from going into Social Work. My feeling is that it depends on your definition of Social Worker. Of course, liberal and conservative are very nebulous terms and it is difficult to compare them, but assuming we use the definitions commonly implied by those who use the terms, I think we can make the following statements. If you consider a Social Worker in the liberal sense of a government worker who goes down a checklist of requirements to see if the person qualifies regardless of need, supervises the client to make sure they fulfill all the requirements, and provides funds for the client to maintain themselves, with the feeling that it is necessary because they cannot help themselves, No, a Conservative would not make a good Social Worker. That is why I no longer work for government agencies. Conservatives care about people and hate to see money wasted on those who don't need help and hate to see those in need arbitrarily denied because they don't fit the requirements. While changes in welfare programs are now requiring workers to work and are providing supplemental assistance such as job training and education, I get the feeling that many government workers feel that that assistance won’t help their clients, because they feel the clients are basically lazy people, who will never change.
